Time is a valuable gift to offer LHS and the animals we serve. Volunteers are very important to the Lexington Humane Society! Whether you have an hour a day - or an hour a month - LHS relies on the assistance of caring, hardworking volunteers to make so many dreams come true. Our shelter offers volunteer opportunities in the following areas:
- Doggie Bank Delegates
- Foster care
- Pet Partner (walking animals)
- Humane education
- Office Mates
- Special events (Beastie Ball, Mutt Putt, Mutt Strut, Portable Information Centers & much more!)
- Gardening
- Painting & light maintenance
LHS Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age, abide by the shelter volunteer policy and attend our two-part volunteer orientation session.
How to Get Started:
Volunteers (Ages 18 and up)
To be a Lexington Humane Society volunteer you must abide by the shelter volunteer policy and attend our two part Volunteer Orientation session (by reservation only). Classes are held once a month, and both classes are required. Our next orientation will be September 9 at 6 pm and September 10 at 6 pm. To register please contact Whitney Wilgus at wwilgus@lexingtonhumanesociety.org.
Teen Volunteers (Ages 14-17)
A separate orientation is conducted for teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17. Pre-registration for teen orientation is required. For more information or to sign up for a volunteer orientation, please contact Whitney Wilgus at wwilgus@lexingtonhumanesociety.org
Community Service (Ages 14 and up)
To participate, students must be at least 14 years of age, complete a community service application, and sign a waiver of liability (students under 18 will need a parent or guardian's signature).
For academic credit, please call at least 2 weeks before your academic deadline to sign up with the LHS Volunteer office. Space is limited.
LHS community service projects benefit the shelter and ultimately the animals in so many ways! And although the projects may not involve direct contact with our animals, there are various opportunities for animal-loving students to contribute and assist with our day-to-day operations.
Community activities typically include:
- Grounds maintenance
- Gardening
- Washing windows
- Folding laundry
- Cleaning animal crates & cages
- Sweeping & mopping
- Light desk work
- Animal food & supply drives
- Painting & light maintenance
