Check Me Out Program

At your Lexington Humane Society, we strive to make our animals as happy and comfortable as possible while they wait to find their forever homes. With our Check Me Out program, you get the opportunity to spend the day with an adoptable dog at no cost to you. Just stop by our Main Adoption Center to view the dogs available for check-out, then enjoy a few hours with a 4-legged pal!

Please note: Our Check Me Out program may be closed on days that have hot or inclement weather forecasted. You're welcome to call 859-233-0044 before arriving to see if the program is currently open on the day you plan to visit.

What does LHS provide?

A backpack full of goodies to take with you! This includes:

  • A tumbler of water
  • Portable water bowl
  • Bandana for the dog to wear
  • Two leashes and a collar
  • Treats
  • Treat pouch

What animals are available for check-out?

For safety purposes, all dogs available for the Check Me Out program have been predetermined by our Adoptions staff. All dogs must be at least 6-months of age or older to participate.

What are the Check Me Out hours?

You can check out a dog from 2pm - 5pm on Wednesdays & Thursdays (adjusted for the holidays). No appointment is required. All dogs available are at our Main Adoption Center located at 1600 Old Frankfort Pike. All dogs MUST be returned to our Main Adoption Center by 5pm on the same day.

Where can I take the dog that I checked out?

Though one goal of this program is to socialize dogs awaiting adoption, safety is the key priority! Please refrain from taking your dog to overly crowded places or anywhere with lots of animals, such as a dog park.

Some suggestions include:

  • An area with spacious trails, such as Coldstream Park or The Arboretum
  • Dog-friendly stores (avoiding peak hours)
  • Car rides
  • The Kentucky Horse Park

What do I need?

A valid photo ID (must be 18 or older) and a working cell phone.

Can I bring my children or pets from home?

For safety purposes, personal pets must remain at home. Children are welcome; we require 1 adult per child, please plan accordingly.
