Each LHS animal receives approximately $500 worth of care before adoption! Every adoption includes:
- Spay/neuter
- Microchip with registration
- Up-to-date vaccinations
- Heartworm test
- Mild deworming, heartworm prevention, and flea control
- Complimentary veterinarian wellness exam from our Preferred Partners, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic or Tates Creek Animal Hospital

Ready to bring them home?
Once you’ve found the perfect pet, it’s time to make it official!* After signing the adoption contract and going through the paperwork, you’ll take your new family member home the same day.** We’re here to ensure a smooth transition and a happy start to your life together!
*All adoptions must begin at least one hour prior to close.
**The adoption process takes roughly 45 minutes to complete - longer during peak hours.

The goal with every adoption is simple: help animals find – and stay in – loving homes. While we provide lots of support during the adoption process, there are some extra tools and resources we think are worth checking out.

The 3-3-3 Rule
Animals feel stress, anxiety, and fear just like us. Moving from the shelter to a new home is a big adjustment. Give your new pet at least 3 months to settle in so their true personality can shine through.
Family for Life
Pets are family, and we want to help keep them with you for life. Whether it’s behavioral issues, potty training, or introducing a new pet, many challenges can be addressed with the right support. You can find expert advice to help keep your pet healthy and happy at home on the Best Friends’ blog.
GoodPup
GoodPup is a one-on-one dog training service that partners with LHS in hopes of reducing return rates. Adopters receive one week FREE upon activation and discounts for continued service. There is no obligation, you can cancel at any time. Learn more or sign up here.
FAQ
- Dogs/puppies: fees start at $50 + tax
- Cats/kittens: fees start at $19 + tax
- Small animals: fees start at $19 + tax
- Farm animals: fees start at $5 + tax
*Mandatory $8 Fayette County dog/cat license fee is not included in the adoption fee.
No appointment necessary. Visit either adoption center during regular hours to meet our adoptable animals and begin the process.
Of course! As long as you are able to come to either adoption center in person, you can adopt.
We can, with a successful meet-and-greet! Once you’ve completed a meet-and-greet, we’re happy to place a hold on the animal until 3 PM the following day. Please note: we’re not able to offer extensions.
Yes! We strongly encourage meet-and-greets between potential pet siblings. Our adoptions team will help coordinate the introduction to make sure it’s a safe and positive experience for everyone.
Yes—just a few important things:
Please bring a valid photo ID and your landlord’s contact information if you rent. We strongly recommend giving your landlord a heads-up to expect a call from us. For the safety and well-being of the animal, we can’t complete an adoption without landlord approval.
All adopted animals must also leave in an approved pet carrier or on a collar and leash. If you don’t have these items, no worries—we have them available for purchase at our adoption centers.
