At a Glance
Sheltering
- On average, nearly 400 homeless animals are in our care every single day
- 4,439 animals cared for in FY23-24, over 500 of which were rescued from crisis situations in smaller communities
- We have no “time limits” for animals in our care and will spend an unlimited amount of time working to find loving homes for happy, healthy animals

Adoptions
- We are the largest adoption agency in Central Kentucky
- Around 4,000 animals are adopted every year
- 3,953 animals adopted in FY23-24; 4,128 in FY22-23
- Last year we adopted 1,703 dogs and puppies, 2,101 cats and kittens, and 149 "other" pets (bunnies, Guinea Pigs, chickens, pot belly pigs, and more!)
- We encourage, promote, and support "adoption as the best option" when searching for a new pet - approximately half of our adopters are first-time adopters!
Spay/Neuter
- Thousands of owned pets and community cats are spayed/neutered through our Spay’sTheWay program every year
- 1,737 free and low-cost surgeries provided in FY23-24; 2,004 in FY22-23
- A third of Spay'sTheWay clients have utilized the program more than once, and over 50% of clients are referred by friends or family.
Education
- On average, thousands of individuals are educated through our camps, school outreach, and shelter tours every year
- 2,830 people were educated in FY23-24; 2,403 educated in FY22-23
Our Valued Supporters
- Over 50,000 supporters visit our main Adoptions Center every year
- On average, over 3,000 individuals attend our ticketed events annually and countless others visit our booths and information tables at community events
- We host over 120,000 followers on our social media sites and celebrate an average of 1,100 visitors to the LHS webpage daily
